Each person has a different skill set depending on their interests, natural abilities, personal qualities and technical skills. Skills can expand your professional competency and allow you to perform your job well. You can gain and improve skills with education and experience. The more advanced you are in performing certain skills, the more likely you are to get or progress in a job.”  

 Sometimes we reach a plateau, requiring us to think outside of our boxes – to develop or seek out new skills in order to further our careers. This can be daunting, and often leads to employees becoming unhappy with their current career destination. Which, happens to be one of the top 10 signs of employee complacency, according to Forbes. However, we can mitigate this by employing different strategies to help develop new skills.  

Here are some strategies for developing new skills:  

  1. Set clear goalsSet a goal for yourself. Where do you see yourself in the future? Setting specific, measurable goals can help you stay on track. 
  2. Adopt a growth mindsetThis involves believing in yourself and your ability to develop skills through learning. Practicing what you learn, and being driven enough to continue.  
  3. Use active learning strategiesBecome engaged in your learning. Brainstorm new thoughts and ideas.  
  4. Use different learning mediumsSome people grasp new concepts by reading about them. Others prefer a hands- on approach. Try engaging in more than one learning medium! 
  5. Learn from someone with more experienceFind a mentor. A professional mentor is typically someone who you admire, respect, and trust.  
  6. Practice, practice, practice!Take every opportunity to practice your new skills. This is how you become proficient in them. Proficiency leads to success!  
  7. Take breaksThis is one of the most important steps! It is crucial to take frequent breaks. Overworking yourself can lead to burn-out or a lack of interest in furthering a skill.  

 Career flexibility and advancement are just a couple of reasons why it’s important to learn new skills. A diverse set of skills also keeps you adaptable to change, improves job satisfaction, opens you up to new opportunities, and provides a confidence boost.  

Even if you’re not currently looking for a new job, it is important to be proactive about your career. The worst thing you can do is simply do your job and hope it’s enough. If you want to make progress in your career, you have to actively seek out new opportunities for yourself. You also need to remain visible and vocal about your achievements, efforts, and upskilling. Sure, some achievements speak for themselves, but being vocal about your efforts to progress your career will make opportunities more likely.
